The 2008-2009 Season kicks off with a trip to Old Trafford on Saturday 16th August. The fixture list released today means that Newcastle will have to avoid the same kind of drubbing handed to them at the hands of Man Utd last season. It is a tough test to kick off the new season but we’ll have to face Man Utd someday, so it might as well be the first day!

To my surprise, I found a lovely stern written email found in my inbox regarding a certain part of my website. I inadvertently committed a cardinal ‘sin’ of showing my website visitors the fixture list of incoming Newcastle games over the season. Now, why do I find this strange? The purpose of this blog is to hand out information to my fellow Newcastle United supporters but apparently the FA takes offence if I show FREE information that could potentially lead to ticket sales /bums on seats. The fixture list is a highly important part of a footie fan’s daily life and yet I feel like I’m being asked to pay for something that should be freely available anyway! I’ve got the funny feeling I’m being exploited here as a football supporter. This blog and many blogs like it actively promote football in this country. They get fans talking, buying the merchandise and forking out continually steep prices to watch their favourite sides play, be it Newcastle, Villa or whichever. I make no money from this website, I just like following my team with a passion and yet the FA sees me as a threat to their business. Odd huh?

So what have the FA suggested as a work around? Well , apart from paying up, I can editorially mention an upcoming fixture but not mention more then two on the same page. Or through the second option, through gritted teeth and some regret, I suggest that my readers now go the official website here to get the fixture info.
