Renaming St James’ Park is just terrible
By Dave NU Blogger | November 10, 2011
We laughed at the adding of Sports Direct @ St James’ Park naming but it was something done to prepare us for the worst bit of advertising that Ashley could thing of. Renaming St James’ Park to Sports Direct Arena is a terrible idea to say the least and Ashley will know full well that selling the naming rights would cause yet more outrage from fans. Even if the move is temporary until someone comes in with a business proposition to change the name yet again, I’ll always refer to the grounds as St James’ Park. Not only does the word ‘Arena’ conjure up the image of the smaller cousin of a Stadium, naming the SJP after a discount sports clothing chain is probably the worst part of it.
Here’s what Derek Lambias said: “Naming the stadium the Sports Direct Arena helps up to showcase the opportunity to interested parties.
“We are now actively seeking a long-term sponsor wishing to acquire full naming rights for the stadium.
“Our shirt sponsorship deal with Northern Rock will also expire at the end of this season, which presents would-be sponsors with the opportunity to acquire both the naming rights and shirt sponsorship deals.”
Shirt sponsorship is one thing but renaming an entire stadium can provoke some real negative responses for brands from vocal fans.
We don’t need this kind of distraction whilst our team is concentrating on a high flying premiership campaign.

At least Talk Sport are still calling it St James’ Park, and I think all true footy fans will continue to call it St James’ too.
