Middlesbrough v Newcastle United Match Preview

By Dave NU Blogger | March 12, 2010

big gameA massive game to try and another attempt to extend our six point lead. That game also has to be a Tyne Tees derby which should make things entertaining. Middlesbrough haven’t really got their season going with Strachan at the helm. Our opposition will be using this game to get back into contention for the play offs. Strachan’s team has lost a lot of ground in the rebuilding and he’ll be after the win more than ever.

Newcastle are looking for the return of  Wayne Routledge from injury spells. Be great to see Routledge back in the squad since he’s been instrumental in our attacking moves of late down the flanks.  Joey Barton seems injured forever but he’s back in training and an outing at a friendly proved he can last 45minutes. But with the central midfield working well, will Barton feature more regularly? Time will tell. It’s a nice position for Hughton and the team to be in with players working so well together. He may get a look in but Hughton shouldn’t be in any rush to get him back on the pitch.

As for Boro, skipper Gary O’Neil was doing his bit to fire up his side:-

“Newcastle have been beating a lot of teams pretty easily but this is our chance to have our say. We have 11 games left. If we win seven or eight of them, then we can still finish in the top six.

“It’s in our hands. It’s all about putting an unbeaten run together.

“That’s why it’s such a  for us. We know what Newcastle have achieved so far but are looking forward to the chance to try to beat them.”

Boro haven’t had the best of times away from the Riverside but at home they can hold their own.

Massive match ahead of us. I’m glad for the 6 point cushion but a win is needed here still with West Brom and Nottingham Forest  still snapping at our heels.
