Shearer Backs Owen To Respond To Criticism
By Dave NU Blogger | May 15, 2009
Today, the Owen question rages on with nay -sayers (including myself) discounting our Striker’s usefulness on the pitch. Alan Shearer robustily denyed that Owen was contemplating retirement come the summer, promptly calling claims “totally ludicrous and totally untrue”.
He continued:
”I understand why the question has been asked about Michael because he needs a goal, just like every centre-forward needs goals,”
“But once he gets one, then I am sure the rest will follow. We have got to keep on creating chances and if we do that, I have no doubt about that.”
I’m sure Shearer has belief in Owen’s abilities however, he’ll get the chance to answer his critics on the pitch. I’m hoping Owen still has the capacity to score goals and I would expect a player like that to get them come Saturday. The problem we have is that players on the big salaries have been a huge disappointment which is partly the reason we find ourselves in the relegation battle. I think Owen is in a privileged position to have a manager who is friend and is supportive . I cite examples in other clubs which will have none of it; take Shevchenko for instance. Our hope as fans is that Owen goes some way into repaying our investment in him for his last two games. If not then I think it is time for him to leave.
