Keegan’s January Transfer Moves

By Dave NU Blogger | January 22, 2008

I don’t exactly envy Kevin Keegan’s situation at the moment. Not only has he got to get an underperforming team up to speed against Arsenal (Twice), KK has to hire and fire his backroom staff at the same time. As well as that he’s got important negotiations with a certain Toon legend at the end of the week! He’s not got an easy task ahead of him but we keep the faith.

After stalling on the January transfer window so far, Keegan has been making a lot of noises about players he wants but no action as yet. Forget the Beckham story as that’s been circulating for a last year and sounded just as daft back then. Personally, I would have liked to see Defoe in the team but that seems unlikely now that he’s back in favor with Ramos. Same with Berbatov but again, not likely as they need all their strikers despite Keane’s superior goal scoring form. Liverpool’s Peter Crouch occasionally features for his side and seems destined to be a bench warmer since the arrival of Torres. Liverpool maybe interested in selling since their financial situation is fairly uncertain.

Although it’ll be great to see a striker in alas, it is defenders we need. Free agent, Sol Campbell was mistakenly overlooked by Roeder before he joined up with Pompey. Since then Campbell has applied his vast experience and helped Redknapp no end. He’ll be an excellent signing if we can get him. Also, with Pompey showing interest in Shola Ameobi, perhaps an exchange is on the cards. Personally, I can’t see much future for Ameobi at the club. He’s such a timid striker. There’s just better players out there. Micah Richards is a Keegan target but I can’t see the defender making a switch. Richards would potentially target a move to the big four as he’s such a proven talent and would more likely switch to a club that has recently won a trophy.

A player who’s definitely going nowhere is Michael Owen. However, it’ll be good to see some good form from him and soon.

We need to strengthen our midfield, so a world class strike such as Owen gets a steady service of balls he can finish. I also think we may need to look beyond the EPL to do it. The talk surrounding Deco is interesting, but I believe he is now on record stating he does not want to come to NUFC. It should be an interesting week.

Thanks for your comment. I think our current midfield is in good shape. They just need KK to sort out their tactics and they would be fine. We’ve got some cracking talent which just needs organising properly. Deco won’t come to Newcastle. i think KK is more interested in getting “home grown” players who could slot straight into the team with minimum fuss.
